Legacy of Service Second Annual Fundraiser

DETROIT, Michigan (October 6, 2010) – Hosted by Detroit City Council President Charles Pugh, The Darin C. Banks Foundation (DCBF) will host its 2nd Annual Gala & Scholarship Fundraiser, "Celebration of Talented Youth," on Saturday October 16, 2010 at 7pm,  at the Westin Book Cadillac in Detroit Michigan. The proceeds will benefit DCBF’s Scholarship Fund.

The Darin C. Banks Foundation honors the life and legacy of a man whose generous spirit was an inspiration to all whom he encountered. A native of Detroit’s east side, Darin C. Banks was also an academic scholarship recipient and working student in his youth.  After graduating from Cass Technical High School in 1987, he graduated from Michigan State University and Wayne State University with degrees in business.

Darin contributed his time and money to a number of charities aimed at improving literacy, providing job training programs, and awarding college scholarships.  In addition, Darin mentored students, new college graduates, and employees by encouraging them to pursue their educational goals, and by providing them with advice to navigate their careers.

Formed shortly after the passing of Mr. Banks in 2009, The Darin C. Banks Foundation enjoyed a very successful first year. DCBF’s website received over 6,000 hits in 2009. DCBF held its first scholarship competition and awarded $3,000 in scholarships to three deserving students.  Additionally, the Foundation in partnership with Mentoring.org, celebrated National Mentoring Month in January 2009 through its e-mentoring and face-to-face mentoring efforts.

The 2nd Annual Gala & Scholarship Fundraiser, “Celebration of Talented Youth,” precedes the 2010-2011 DCBF’s Annual Collegiate Scholarship Competition, which kicks off Nov 1, 2010. Tickets to “Celebration of Talented Youth” are $75, and can be purchased online at www.dcbfoundation.org, or mail payment to DCBF, P.O. Box 3726, Union, NJ 07083.  In addition to live entertainment, food and drinks, DCBF will hold a silent auction featuring celebrity memorabilia.  Online bidding is also available.  For more information, contact DCBF at (313) 605-0057, dcbfoundation@peoplepc.com and www.dcbfoundation.org.

The Darin C. Banks Foundation goes back to its roots
DETROIT, Michigan (May 18, 2009) –The Darin C. Banks Foundation goes back to its roots:  makes presentation at annual Coleman A. Young Foundation Scholarship Awards Program and donates $2500 to its scholarship fund.

The Coleman A. Young Foundation (CAYF) hosted its Annual Scholarship Awards Program on Monday May 18, 2009 at the Historic Gem Century Theatres and Century Grille in Detroit, Michigan.  Among the many diverse portions of the program, The Darin C. Banks Foundation, (DCBF) saluted its namesake in a multi-media presentation highlighting many of Darin’s life experiences, including the positive effect receiving the Coleman A. Young Foundation scholarship had on his life.   DCBF also donated $2500.00 to the Coleman A. Young Foundation’s scholarship fund.  Asked about the event, DCBF Board Member Ashley Pope stated,

If I had to use one word to summarize the evening, it would be inspirational.  To see a room full of young black scholars who have followed their dreams of furthering their education was beautiful! The Alumni salute to Darin Banks by DCBF Founder and Executive Director Michelle Banks captured everyone’s attention. Seeing all of those young people who the Coleman A. Young Foundation has touched was tremendous. I hope that The Darin C. Banks Foundation is able to have the same, if not a greater effect in the lives of young people by helping them achieve their dream of attending college.”

In addition to DCBF Board Members in attendance, Darin Banks’ mother-in-law Carrie Dawson attended the CAYF event.  She had this to say:  “The program was beautiful.  I really enjoyed the tribute to my son-in-law Darin.  He was a wonderful and generous young man.  His memory lives on in our hearts and through The Darin C. Banks Foundation.”

Officially on the philanthropic map, The Darin C. Banks Foundation forges ahead, determined to make a difference in the lives of today’s youth and tomorrow’s leaders.
